Namo Amitabha! The essence of man is selfishness, and such essence determines that man has no sense of conscience. Gratitude can generate conscience; gratitude can make up for conscience; gratitude is the best nourishment of conscience.
The universe and the dharmadhatu exert great and deep grace to us, incomparable and infinite grace. Where would we be without the universe, the dharmadhatu, the earth, air, leaves, and water? All these have made us and made every one of us at every place, every hour, and every minute. But what have we given in return? And, are we grateful?
We have great fun fighting with man, with heaven, and with earth; we even have fun fighting with ourselves. There are fights between husband and wife, between mother and son, and between brothers. There are internal fights and eternal fights. Ours is always a selfish heart, constantly thinking of getting something and owning something to fulfil oneself, to distinguish oneself from others and get some special treatment.
But what we precisely ignore is the universe, the dharma realm, a piece of leaf, a drop of water, all people, all connections, and all the environment. It is all these that accomplish 99.999999999999% of us. The Buddha power is particularly relevant. All Buddhas are in the mind of all sentient beings; it is in our minds that all Buddhas silently guard us, unconditionally guard us, and unconditionally wait to accomplish us.
May I cordially ask who would we be without these? What would we have? What would we be? In fact, we would be nothing. We would really become empty, wouldn’t we? Yet, have we expressed a word of gratitude for all these? Have we had a grateful thought? What are we fighting for? What are we striving for? Right? It is like the nose, eyes, ears, and the mouth are competing with one another. In fact, they are in oneness. The nose has the appearance of a nose, the eye has the appearance of an eye, and the ear has the appearance of an ear. Why fight? Why compare ? Right?
So if one develops such deep-level gratitude, one would know he has nothing but gratitude, unconditional gratitude, and unconditional fulfillment of all we are grateful for, isn’t it so? What else is there but gratitude? Are we entitled to be lazy? Are we entitled to loosen up, to feel comfortable with our tiny selves in their worldly presentation? What do the two heads of the Jivajivaka bird fight with each other for? It is like the eye, ear, nose, and tongue of a man each with its own function, its unique appearance and characteristic. What is the point to distinguish, compare, and fuss about among them? Am I right or not?
The universe and the dharmadhatu have accomplished us. Everything in the dharmadhatu including a leaf, a small grass, a grain of earth, or a drop of water, even the invisible air is accomplishing us, and has accomplished all about us. In fact, all things about us are so accomplished, isn’t that right? The universe and the dharmadhatu have accomplished our selves, the so-called ego parts of us all, that can pray to Buddha and directly connects with the sea of Buddha's merits, with the virtuous achievements of Buddha and with everything about Buddha. Through chanting Amitabha, we are able to get accomplished for our entire lives, to provide for the dharmadhatu, and become so instrumental to the whole universe.
How do we express our gratitude unless we chant Amitabha? And how can we achieve anything unless we chant Amitabha? And, how can we stand worthy of the universe and the dharmadhatu - this leaf, this grain of soil, and this drop of water, unless we chant Amitabha? If we gain complete achievement simply by chanting Amitabha, how grateful we would be! How rich the rewards are! What level of gratitude would match with such rewards? Isn’t it so?
So as we put it, a grateful heart can free us, and free us straightly from selfishness, from laziness, and from everything - to be grateful can free you and me from all things and everything. To know about gratitude, about how to be grateful, how to progress and improve, and how to move on in succession is to know about abhisambuddha. Just think about it: what can be compared to becoming the Buddha and being grateful through chanting Amitabha? And what mentality is better than gratitude? Am I wrong or not?
So all day long we perceive there is our ego, and all day long we perceive the love, feel, comfort, thoughts, ideas and needs of this ego - how pitiful! Isn’t that right? What is more important than the notion that I am grateful, I want to be grateful, I must be grateful, and I chant Amitabha to show I am grateful? Nothing at all. Who among us in this world comprehend being grateful? And who among us in this world are truly grateful? Am I not right?
Thus gratitude leads to everything and everything owes itself to gratitude. All of everything comes down to nothing but a simple Namo Amitabha. Amitabha. This then is the real, true, and genuine gratitude Samadhi.
One who indeed perceives gratitude, recognizes gratitude, knows about gratitude and becomes truly grateful is the man to gain Samadhi. He is the one who gains Samadhi in its fullness. Amitabha!
